What Is Renewable Energy & What Are Its Sources?

Energy has become one of the most discussed and important concepts today. Sustainable energy is an important issue for all societies around the world. The reasons behind the energy becoming such an important issue can be listed as the consumption and production of energy resources, environmental effects and the decrease in access to inexhaustible energy resources.

The use of fossil fuels to meet the increasing energy demand with the rapidly increasing human population all over the world causes environmental pollution and accelerated global warming. With the continuation of this excessive use, the thought that the use of fossil fuels will end in the future and that there will be no clean world to live in has led to the increase and spread of the use of renewable energy resources.

Promoting the use of renewable energy sources depends on raising people’s awareness on this issue, doing studies on this issue and increasing research on this issue in universities. In order to carry out these researches and raise awareness in universities, Energy Systems Master’s Program was opened in our country.

The aim of this program is to train experts in this field who will take part in the application of clean and renewable energy sources in our country. We are working on renewable energy not only in our country but also all over the world, and efforts are being made to expand the use of these energy sources.

Renewable energy, also known as sustainable energy, is the energy obtained from the energy flow that exists in natural processes and can be used continuously and, unlike fossil fuels, does not have any harm to the environment. About 80% of the energy used today comes from fossil fuels. The intense use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas causes global warming to increase, pollution of the environment and the death of nature.

Renewable energy sources help reduce dependency on fossil fuels in energy production all over the world. Renewable energy has many different sources such as solar, geothermal, hydraulic, wave and tidal, wind and biomass.

In short, energy sources such as sun and water are called renewable energy sources. These energy sources can be used repeatedly and have no harm to the environment. Since renewable energy sources are provided from natural sources, there is no harm to nature and the environment. Renewable energy sources, unlike fossil fuels, do not run out over time and can be used continuously.

Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas are examples of non-renewable energy sources. Examples of renewable energy sources are basically solar energy, biomass energy, geothermal energy, wind energy, hydroelectric energy, hydrogen and wave energy.

SOLAR ENERGY

The sun is a great source of energy for all living things in the universe and even for all planets. Solar energy is used especially in the summer months when the sun’s rays are intense. Thanks to solar energy, people save on many issues such as electricity bills. Solar panels are used to use solar energy properly and effectively. These panels, with their size and angle, take sunlight and help convert it into energy. Today, solar energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources.

Especially thanks to the solar panels placed on the roofs of the houses or mounted in areas that receive intense sunlight, water can be heated and used in the water heating of the house, helping to meet the heating needs of people. Solar panels collect the rays from the sun and convert it into heat or electrical energy. Solar energy helps people meet their heat, light and electricity needs. Solar panels convert the energy they collect directly into these energies and are generally used by placing them on top of houses or cars. Thanks to solar energy, you have the opportunity to meet your needs such as heating and lighting quickly and cheaply.

WIND POWER

Wind energy is one of the widely used energy sources like solar energy. Wind energy is actually a renewable energy source from the sun. The sun heats the land and sea in different ways, and winds are formed from the pressure difference created in this way. There is no wind in a place where there is no pressure difference.

Wind turbines are installed in places where the pressure difference is high, that is, where the wind blows intensely and heavily. Wind turbines are very tall and large. Wind turbines help convert kinetic energy from wind into mechanical energy. They then convert this energy into electrical energy. The higher the speed and intensity of the wind, the greater the energy obtained from the wind.

BIOMASS ENERGY

Biomass renewable energy is an inexhaustible and ubiquitous source of energy. This energy, which is used especially in rural areas, greatly helps the development of the socio-economic situation. The source of biomass energy consists of plants grown such as wheat, barley, herbs, algae, animal excrement, organic wastes and industrial wastes.

Biomass energy is one of the renewable energy sources used all over the world, especially to solve the environmental pollution caused by the use of fossil fuels. Therefore, the use of biomass energy should be expanded to prevent global warming and environmental pollution all over the world.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Geo means ground and thermal heat. In this context, geothermal energy roughly means ground heat. Many disasters and events occur in nature. As a result of these events, water seeps into the underground, namely magma, through cracks in the earth’s crust. These waters reaching the magma are heated and come out as steam through cracks in the earth’s crust.

In this context, the water vapor coming to the surface is used in energy production. This energy is converted into electrical energy by the power plants. Geothermal energy is used not only for electricity generation, but also for meeting energy in hospitals, physical therapy areas of patients and touristic places.

HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY

Like other renewable energy sources, hydroelectric energy converts the energy it produces into electrical energy. Hydroelectric energy produces energy using the flow rate and flow rate of water. Hydroelectric energy is a renewable energy source obtained with the help of dams and power plants established in places where the flow and flow rate of water is high.

Hydroelectric energy is a natural and clean energy source used not only in the production of electricity, but also in transportation, irrigation and even the development of fisheries. Hydroelectric energy is among the most widely used renewable energy sources in the world.

WAVE AND OCEAN ENERGY

Water resources such as the seas and oceans in the world facilitate the creation and use of many renewable energies. For example, the oceans contribute to the generation of wind energy due to the pressure difference they create. In another way, the oceans are used to derive mechanical energy from wave and tidal energy.

The oceans are one of the water sources that collect most of the rays from the sun, since water sources make up a large part of the world. If the thermal energy obtained from the oceans could be used completely,

It would help to create enough energy to meet the energy needs of the whole world. Many companies around the world use renewable energy sources to save money. Thanks to their renewable energy shares, these companies save money and are responsible for the distribution and supply of these energy resources to different areas.

The use of renewable energy needs to increase, be used and become widespread throughout the world.
